The blue sky was slowly morphing into pinky hues as the sun prepared to say goodbye to the day. She felt weightless, her dog snuggled on her lap, a full glass of Bollinger in her hand, looking out over the garden and feeling the warmth of the day slip away.
It was finally over. She had had her last day in drab-round-hole-land. She had lasted three months and was surprised she’d even managed that without losing her mind. Mr She commented that she perhaps had, just a little, lost her mind. He had seen her stress and frustration, her absolute terror that this might be her life now ….. he, like she, was glad it was over.
She didn’t want to appear ungrateful – it was a gift that had landed in her lap at the right moment, thanks to her network of friends. It had meant her redundancy was nicely tucked away as a nest egg and, with any luck, an investment in house renovations … perhaps a new kitchen or even a cocktail bar. It had been character building her mother had said – in truth she didn’t think she needed any more character.
She was now genuinely looking forward to her new job … a proper job! Where she could improve things, make change, achieve something. She’d also be working with past managers – people she knew, respected and admired – it was her new future and she was excited.
But for now she sat sipping her Bolly … feeling the weight of the world slipping from her shoulders, planning her week ahead before her start day. A week off to destress and detox and get her positive outlook on life back. Lunch with friends, riding ponies and no doubt a cocktail or two as well as the inevitable house chores thrown in.
The last sliver of light was now disappearing and the pinky sunset was turning an inky blue. Sadly the Bollinger was also practically gone and she felt a warm glow from the bubbles, wishing there was more.
A week off … a new job … she felt the happiest she had been in a long while. Even with a nearly empty bottle of Bolly ….
